USAG is one of the global leaders in tool manufacturing. Renowned for the quality of its products and services, USAG also stands out for its agility, speed, and forward-thinking approach in adopting innovative digital solutions to introduce new services or improve and streamline established workflows. This was the case with the new USAG Kit Planner project, which our team had the privilege of working on. USAG’s catalog includes a range of products, referred to as containers, ranging from multi-drawer trolleys to toolboxes. These containers can be purchased as bundles with tools designed to fit inside. Naturally, since the space within trolleys and toolboxes is limited and predefined, only specific tool combinations can optimize the container’s volume. The client’s request was to provide customers with a fast and innovative tool featuring a strong visual component to configure the internal spaces by adding product modules and combining them to maximize the container’s capacity. Starting with a preliminary study based on modularity, we developed a geometric model capable of adapting to the variable volumes of drawers and toolboxes. With this foundation, we moved on to designing the graphical interface. This step was particularly delicate, as the ultimate goal was to make module composition as intuitive as possible, delivering a seamless experience despite the complexity of the offered combinations.
Having established this foundation, the software development was divided into two key areas: the frontend, where CSS, JavaScript, and jQuery were implemented to ensure the UI/UX was as simple and user-friendly as possible, and the backend, which served as the true powerhouse of the project. On the development side, the system was directly integrated with the USAG database, ensuring that the management of containers and their contents was always in sync with the current availability of products or new offerings from the company. In addition to allowing free configuration of modules, the digital tool we developed enables users to preselect contents from a set of predefined kits, curated in the back office by the client based on usage categories. Finally, depending on the chosen container, users can complete the configuration by adding compatible accessories. The result is a fast, simple yet deep and flexible tool that allows users to generate a PDF or Excel file of their configuration to share with the sales network, streamlining processes and eliminating any margin for error.
